FAQs
You Ask - I Answer
Here are some more detailed answers to commonly asked questions. Feel free to let me know if your question was not covered and I'll add it!
Waiting times for first appointments can vary greatly, depending on current availability. Usually there will be approximately 4-6 weeks before an initial appointment can be made. If you have urgent need, please discuss this with me so an alternative referral can be arranged if necessary.
There are several ways to make an appointment:
Appointments are available from Tuesday to Fridays. During your intake procedure, your first appointment is made after discussing a suitable time for you. I am often unable to pick up the phone, however you can send an email, which is usually responded to within 24 hours (Tues - Fri).
Use the Contact Form.
Make a set of forward bookings at your first appointment.
To claim up to 10 sessions on a Medicare rebate per calendar year, you will need a "Mental Health Treatment Plan" and a referral letter prepared by your usual GP or Psychiatrist for an initial 6 Sessions.
An additional 4 Sessions can be accessed after your GP re-assesses your need (for a total of 10 rebated Sessions per calendar year). Please let your GP know in advance when requesting this, so they can allow the extra time needed in their schedule.
You can also see a Psychologist as a private client, without a referral, at any time. Clients with Private Health Care may be able to claim a rebate through their provider. Fathom Psychology offers Tyro Health to assist with claim processing.
Fees can vary between $240 (50 mins) and $345 (80 mins), depending on the services needed. More detail can be found HERE
Note: The Australian Association of Psychologists Incorporated (AAPi) recommended Fee for a standard 50 min appointment is $315. Reduced fees in this practice are made possible through streamlined administration processes. I am able to offer lower than standard fees as a sole practitioner with no additional staff overheads.
Fathom Psychology is not able to offer Bulk Billing at this time.
Payment of full fee is due at the end of your session using your credit or debit card. Medicare rebates will be processed at the same time and refunded by Medicare directly to the bank account you have linked to your Medicare details.
Fathom Psychology offers Tyro Health for private health fund claiming.
Referred DVA clients fees are billed to DVA directly with an approved plan.
As you can appreciate, an appointment with a sole-practitioner psychologist like myself means at least an hour of time is booked especially for you. Unlike GP offices and large practices, I do not have the capacity to "fit people in" at the last minute if someone does not present for their appointment or cancels with late notice.
Irregular and missed appointments have negative consequences broadly for:
You: Disruption to your therapy progress and delays in reaching wellness cost you personally in the long term and make it difficult for your psychologist to provide you with consistent professional care.
Other clients: Who have been unable to obtain an appointment and are on a wait-list.
Psychologist: A sole-practitioner's practice is often the only source of income earned, therefore, frequent cancellations or reschedules have a direct impact on your psychologists capacity to support themself and their family.
For all the reasons above, if you need to cancel or change an appointment, please give as much notice as possible. A minimum of 48 business hours before your appointment time is required to cancel. Less than 48 business hours will result in a $100 +10% GST fee if the appointment is unable to be re-booked.
Life does sometimes present us with emergency and unexpected situations. If you are unable to make your appointment at late notice, please contact me as soon as possible to discuss the circumstances and re-organise your appointment. If several appointments are rescheduled or missed at late notice, we will need to discuss your ongoing schedule.
